Instructions for Windows XP / Vista

Part 1: Install Symantec Client

  1. Log into your computer on an account with administrator privledges.

  2. The latest version of Symantec AntiVirus can be downloaded at the Antivirus and Firewall Software page. Locate your operating system in the list of downloads, then right click on the download link and select Save Link As.... The Save As window will appear. Choose Desktop and click the OK button to safe the file.

  3. After the download has completed, double-click the file to begin installation. If you receive an Open File - Security Warning popup, click Run.

  4. Accept the install prompts according to the following series of images:

Part 2: Configure Scan Options
  1. After the installation has completed, reboot your machine. The next time you login, you will notice the Symantec yellow shield in your system tray.

  2. Right-click on the yellow shield, and click Open Symantec AntiVirus... This will open the Symantec AntiVirus window.

  3. In the window, click Scan Computer. This will open a list of scannable drives in the right-hand pane.

  4. Then click the Options... button.

  5. In the Scan Options menu on the left, check-mark Scan for expanded threats. An Enable Security Risk window will popup. Click the Close button.

  6. Check-mark Scan for in-memory threats.

  7. Click the Advanced button. This will open the Scan Advance Options menu on the right.

  8. Under When scanning compressed files, change the number for level deep. Click the top arrow and increase the number to 10. This setting ensures scans on multilayered compressed files (ie. when a zipped file has zipped files inside it).

  9. Click the radio button for Scan resident portions of offline and sparse files.

  10. Click OK on the Scan Advanced Options menu. This will close out the window.

  11. Click Save Settings on the Scan Options menu. This will not close the window. Click OK to close it.

Part 3: Configure a Scheduled Scan
  1. Back at the Symantec AntiVirus window, in the left pane, expand Scheduled Scans and click New Scheduled Scan. You can leave the Scan Name and Description, as the defaults, and click Next.

  2. Schedule the scans Daily and select a time when the computer will be on but not in user (e.g. your lunch hour), and click Next.

    NOTE: If your computer is off at the scheduled scan time, the scan will be performed when the computer is turned back on.

  3. Under Scan place a check next to all local disks, and click Options.... In the Scan Options window, click the Advanced button. This will open the Scan Advanced Options window.

  4. In the Scan Advanced Options windows, underneath Dialog options, you may uncheck Show scan progress. This prevents the Symantec Scan Progress window from popping up every time a scheduled scan starts. Turning this off is a matter of personal preference, and you are not required to do it.

  5. After you have selected Dialog options settings, Click OK on the Scan Advanced Options window, and click OK on the Scan Options window. In the Symantec AntiVirus window, click Save, to save the scheduled scan.

Installing Norton AntiVirus v.9 on Macintosh OS X

Part 1: Downloading

The latest version of Symantec AntiVirus can be downloaded for Mac OS X at the Antivirus and Firewall Software page. Locate your operating system in the list of downloads, then right click on the download link and select Save Link As.... The Save As window will appear. Choose Desktop and click the OK button to safe the file.

In order to install Norton antivirus, you must place the Norton AntiVirus MacOS X Installer on your desktop. Double click the installer to begin.

Part 2: Installation

  1. In the first prompt, click Continue to confirm that you want to install the software, and then choose Continue in the main window.
  2. Choose all of the default installation settings when prompted.
  3. When asked if you want to run Live Update, choose Yes
  4. Once the installation and live update have finished, you should Restart your computer.

Part 3: Configuring

  1. Select Schedule from the panel on the left and click New... in the screen that follows.
  2. When prompted to select a task, choose Product Update.
  3. In the Choose a product to update menu, select Virus Definitions.
  4. When asked to Set a Frequency menu, select Daily.
  5. At the bottom of the window, Set the time to one your computer will normally be online.

Step 4: Disabling Auto Protect (OS 10.4 Tiger Only)

Autoprotect is not currently compatible with OS 10.4, an update is expected in early July 2005. Autoprotect can be disabled by following the image below:
